Why have the changes been introduced?

Recent surveys carried out at the Fair have identified that those who visit and trade at the Fair would like to see improvements. The type of comments received included:

  • a need for better management - eg layout, separation of activities, access for emergency vehicles
  • improved safety controls
  • a market which is more in keeping with the traditions of the Fair
  • control over the number and type of stalls allowed
  • improved facilities, ie toilets and water supply
  • a ban on vehicles driving on and off the market fields during peak hours
  • pre-booking of trade stall pitches to ensure there is a suitable pitch available and to avoid the need to come early and queue for a pitch.

Enforcement agencies ie Environmental Health and Trading Standards officers, welcome the introduction of a pre-booking system. This will enable officers to obtain information beforehand about who will be trading at the Fair and to follow up any queries with traders before the event. Environmental Health and Trading Standards Officers attend the Fair every day and will visit all stalls to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
