How to get to Appleby

By train

Arriving by rail is by far the best option for the day visitor. It avoids the congested traffic and parking charges of coming by car. Appleby rail station is right in the heart of the town, and is only a minute or so walk (down a fairly steep hill) from the buzz of the Fair.

The station is on the historic Settle-Carlisle line, widely believed to be the most picturesque rail line in England. For details of train timetables and more information on this historic line click here. For rail connection details click here.

By bus

For information on bus services in Cumbria and bus timetables click here. Bus services can be disrupted during the Fair and it is advisable to check with Traveline before planning your journey. Ring 0871 200 22 33 or visit their website.

Service 563 Kirkby Stephen–Penrith via Appleby.
A normal service will operate with the bus going in and out of Appleby. The bus will stop in both directions at the bottom of Station Road as the Sands will be closed. There may be delays of up to 20 minutes to the usual timetable as a result of additonal traffic in Appleby and along the A66.

Arrving by coach
All coaches will arrive from A66 east or B6260 south and the coach drop off/collection will be at the town centre bus stop (outside Market Hall).
