Information for residents of Appleby and surrounding communities

The primary aim of the Multi Agency Strategic Co-ordinating Group is to make the Fair safer and more enjoyable for everyone - and that includes minimising the impact the Fair has on local people.

A number of new formal measures have been introduced which should make the Fair a more positive experience for local people.

A new licensing scheme has been introduced for the caravan sites in Appleby providing accommodation during the Fair. In order to gain a licence, landowners have to comply to planning conditions, which include adequate provision of facilities for litter collection, toilets and water supplies. Find out more about the scheme here. As well as improving toilet facilities on the caravan sites, efforts are being made to improve the toilet facilities in the town.

Pubs and off-licences in Appleby have also been encouraged to join the Carlisle and Eden Best Bar None scheme to cut down on the number of incidents of alcohol-related disorder. Alcohol licensing arrangements for Appleby Fair.

Our main priority at the Fair is public safety, and to do this the control of traffic through the town needs to be carefully managed. The 120m stretch of road known as The Sands will be closed to traffic again this year between 9am and 5pm, with access limited to emergency vehicles only. A one-way system will be enforced in the town, with no waiting restrictions in the centre.

In order to manage the influx of people from surrounding areas, a number of temporary stopping places are traditionally used en route to Appleby. To find out more for the arrangements that have been put in place this year for these transit sites click here.

Some local residents see the Fair as an opportunity to sell goods to passers by from their own properties. Before doing this you should check whether you are complying with legislation on street trading. Street trading consents.

The NHS is working to ensure existing local health services remain unaffected during this year’s Appleby Fair. NHS Cumbria can reassure residents of Appleby and the surrounding area that health services will not be affected during the Fair. The Northwest Ambulance Service will be deploying additional resources in the shape of two Rapid Response Vehicles and one Emergency Ambulance which will be available during the busiest periods of the Fair. A senior Ambulance Service officer will also be allocated to the Fair during busy times.

Eden District Council provides a continuous clean up operation of Appleby town centre and the surrounding road side verges during the Fair’s duration. Street cleansing takes place from daily 6am to 6pm by the Council’s contractor Enterprise using street cleansing teams and mechanical and mini sweepers.

The clean up of transit and caravan sites is the responsibility of the land owner.

Leaflets have been distributed to local residents ahead of the Fair. To view an electonic version of the leaflet click here.

And finally, the group co-ordinating the Fair is keen to hear your experiences and feedback on the Fair. On Monday July 6th at Appleby Market Hall there will be two public drop-in sessions from 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm followed by a public meeting from 7pm-9pm. You can also send us your thoughts electronically about the way Appleby Fair is co-ordinated. Click here to complete a feedback form.
