Flashing Lane
This road is closed to traffic from 9.30am until 5pm on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Horses traditionally run up and down the Flashing Lane to be shown to prospective buyers. This area can be extremely dangerous, with fast-moving horses and carts. Pedestrians should stay behind the wooden barriers.

Market area
Food and drink sellers and market stalls selling a range of merchandise - some of it horse-related.

Education on the Hoof
The Education on the Hoof project will be based on Salt Tip Corner just below the market area and will include the Travellers' Truck for Gypsy and Traveller children.
Traffic heading east and arriving to Appleby from Penrith should follow the yellow signs to the correct car park. A one-way system will be enforced in the town, with no waiting restrictions in the centre. Do not attempt to drive into Appleby town centre as there are heavy delays of up to an hour during the Fair. Any cars attempting to park on the side of the A66 will be ticketed and towed away. Use the approved car parks, or you risk being ticketed and towed. Traffic heading west and arriving to Appleby from Scotch Corner should follow the yellow signs to the correct car park. A one-way system will be enforced in the town, with no waiting restrictions in the centre. Do not attempt to drive into Appleby town centre as there are heavy delays of up to an hour during the Fair. Any cars attempting to park on the side of the A66 will be ticketed and towed away. Use the approved car parks, or you risk being ticketed and towed. All traffic heading north to Appleby on the M6 should leave the M6 at junction 38 and head north on the B6260. This is the best way to avoid the heavy congestion in the town during the Fair and access the car parks. A one-way system will be enforced in the town, with no waiting restrictions in the centre. Horse washing area
Horses are traditionally washed in the River Eden in this area so that they're looking good for prospective buyers. The water can be deep here - so Fair participants entering the river to wash horses need to be aware of the dangers and take responsibility for their own safety.

The Sands
The 120m stretch of road known as The Sands will be closed to traffic from 9am until 5pm on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with access limited to emergency vehicles only. There are lots of horses in this area - please don’t approach a horse unless it’s with its owner and you have permission - horses can kick or bite. Keep children under close supervision near animals.

Appleby Rail Station
Coming by train is by far the best option for the day visitor. It avoids the congested traffic and parking charges . Appleby rail station is only a minute or so walk (down a fairly steep hill) from the buzz of the Fair. This website has details of how to get here by rail.

Bus Park Education on the Hoof
A series of talks about Gypsy and Traveller culture will be held here at Centre 67 on Chapel St, next to Broad Close car park. Education on the Hoof will also be based at Salt Tip Corner, just below the market area and Flashing Lane on the north side of the A66. Click on the 'Visitors' tab above for more information.

This car park is run by Appleby Rotary Club All profit will go to Great North Air Ambulance and charities supported by Appleby Rotary Club.
Directions to this new car park will be signed from the A66 at the Long Marton turn off.
