Planning your visit

This website provides information on the availability and location of organised temporary stopping places and transit sites, please use this to plan your route.

In addition traditional roadside verge encampments can continue to be used where it is safe to do so by motorised vehicles unless signage indicates otherwise.

A limited number of temporary stopping places are also available for motors, so if you’re travelling to the Fair by motorised transport, please don’t arrive too early and please remember that for those travelling by horse drawn bow tops, these stopping places provide vital resting places for horses.

For 2011 the main licensed sites for Appleby Fair will not open until 4am on Thursday 2 June and any planned or organised encampments in a 1.5 mile zone around Fair Hill must have planning consent and a site license and will not be permitted ahead of this time.

In South Lakeland a new temporary stopping place was provided at Scrogg Bank for 2010 and will again be open for 2011. If it is well used and respected it is anticipated that other fields may be made available for future Fairs.

Please note: there is no longer a temporary stopping place at Stainmore.

While at the Fair

The primary aim of the Multi Agency Strategic Co-ordinating Group is to make the Fair safer and more enjoyable for everyone - and that includes minimising the impact the Fair has on local people.

To find out what you need to do about horse passports click here and for an interactive map of Appleby click here.

To find out which pubs are open click here. Pubs and off-licences in Appleby have also been encouraged to join the local Best Bar None scheme to cut down on the number of incidents of alcohol-related disorder.

Caravan sites in Appleby providing accommodation during the Fair operate under a licensing scheme. In order to gain a license, landowners have to comply with planning conditions, which include adequate provision of facilities for litter collection, toilets and water supplies. In recent years toilet facilities have been improved on the caravan sites.

Our main priority at the Fair is public safety, and to do this traffic through the town needs to be carefully managed. The Sands will be closed to traffic again this year between 9am and 5pm, with access limited to emergency vehicles only. A one-way system will be enforced in the town, with no waiting restrictions in the centre.

During the Fair the Education on the Hoof project will be offering a series of events and exhibitions to celebrate the culture and history of Gypsies and Travellers and the Fair.
